Fishing Report : Sunday, 7 March 2010  (The Channel remains closed)

Estuary/River

The fishing has been a variable with some anglers doing well while others struggle.  A Melbourne based angling club here for the long weekend had mixed results.  A few of them caught their bag around the edge of the lake while others struggled.  The catch was mainly bream with a few tailor and estuary perch. The bait of choice seemed to be fresh dead prawn with sandworm not working as well nor the live prawn.  Fishing in the Channel was probably not as productive as fishing in the Inlet around the edge.  Several days ago two Don’s each caught a magnificent bream of 1.288 and 1.291 kg respectively within 400 meters of each other, one on a plastic and the other on a live prawn. They both are members of the Bemm River Angling Club and see the full story in the next Newsletter.  If you are not a member and regularly read this report, why not join.  Go to the Club Events page and download an application and pay the $15.00 and then be eligible for tor our New Easter Bream Competition.   In the channel, the large yellow fin bream which came in when the Entrance was opened are only about in small numbers and appear all over the Lake.  In the lake, the bream are being caught on bait, vibes and plastics.   Catches of 1-10 bream per day are typical for each fisherman at present.  The luderick are quiet as there is no local sandworm available.    The small bream do not appear to be a nuisance at present perhaps because prawn and lures are being used.  There have been tailor caught in the channel trolling lures.  Fishing vibes seems to be not as effective as using plastics.  The Flathead are relatively quiet although I saw two weighed in today.  There are no reports of Salmon in the Channel.  The prawn are about in good numbers at night.

Local sandworm is not available at the shop and prozen local prawn is the main bait at present.

Those who have a good day should remember the bag limit applies per day and should not go and catch more of the same species of fish in the afternoon if they have already reached the bag limit.  Several anglers have recently been fined for going out twice and catching more than their bag limit.  $ 1200 each I hear with action still pending.  There is enough variety of species of fish for people to target a different species once they reach the bag limit.  Remember we want our children and grand children to enjoy the Bemm.

Beaches

The beach fishermen appear to be catching good silver trevally at present at the 1st and 2nd turn offs on the back road and at Pearl Point.  One group caught 13 on pilchards at the first turn off.  They also caught 6 salmon to 5 lbs on poppers.  Another group at the 2nd turn off caught 3 trevally on poppers.  A local angler has have been going regularly throwing metal lures at the first turn off where there is a great hole but has had no luck in the past two trips.  Another angler has been using a popper and bait with good success.  If you walk between Gunnai Beach and Pearl Pt there are some delightful gutters about halfway if you're wanting some exercise as well as throwing a few lures around. Some huge Taylor have been caught with the salmon using a wire trace and white bait.

A few gummy shark have been caught on the beaches on the moon.

Offshore there seem to be plenty of flathead being caught by launching from Cape Conran and a few gummy shark.

There are still some access issues with the beaches rough weather a few months ago. They have significant drops down to the beach making them hard to get down to - use caution. Check with locals before venturing out or alternatively give Parks Victoria a ring in Orbost. Latest photos can be seen on the Beaches page.

Before you decide on where to fish have a look from a high point for gutters along the beach edges - these will more often than not contain schools of foraging fish. All you need to do is cast into one of these gutters, preferably on an incoming tide, and hang on!!

Remember wherever your fishing - don't leave rubbish lying around, bring it home with you. We need to protect our environment - if we don't who will!

Finally, only keep what you need. We need to preserve our fish stocks so catch and release where possible. Log onto the Fishcare website for more information on catch and release rulers and techniques.

Check with your local advisor upon arrival in town to make sure that these reports are up to date. We will attempt to update this site as often as possible. If you have any feed back please contact us and we will be happy to post your stories, adventures and photos on this site.
