Fishing Report : Wednesday, 7 July 2010  (The Channel has been opened to the sea)

Estuary/River

The town continues to be relatively quiet.  The Inlet remains open with the water quite low.  The bream fishing continues to be variable.  The bait fishermen have found it tough in the last week.  One local did not lose a bait in 3 hours even though he and his visitor caught a few good fish earlier in the week including two good luderick.  Another bait fisherman from near the Snowy also did not lose a bait despite fronting the cold at day break and staying out until about 10 am.  Fishing lures and plastics has been more successful in the last week.  If you go to www.youtube.com and search for MrBemmRiver you will find some footage of one of our members landing a bream on a plastic.    If you are not a member and regularly read this report, why not join.  Go to the Club Events page and download an application and pay the $15.00 and then be eligible for our annual heaviest fish awards.  Catches of 0-10 bream per day are typical for each fisherman at present.  The luderick are quiet even though local sandworm is available.    The small bream can be nuisance.  The tailor are still being caught in the channel with lures although they are not as good a size as they have been with one weighed in at 1.669 kg over our Easter competition.  The smaller tailor are all over the lake and make a mess of your plastic if you manage to land it before it takes your whole lure.  Fishing vibes seems to be as effective as using plastics.  The Flathead are relatively quiet.  The Salmon have not entered the Channel since it has been opened.

Local sandworm is available at the shop but frozen local prawn is the preferred bait at present.

Those who have a good day should remember the bag limit applies per day and should not go and catch more of the same species of fish in the afternoon if they have already reached the bag limit.  Several anglers have recently been fined for going out twice and catching more than their bag limit.  $ 1200 each I hear with action still pending.  There is enough variety of species of fish for people to target a different species once they reach the bag limit.  Remember we want our children and grand children to enjoy the Bemm.

Beaches

The beach fishing is very good at present with good catched of Salmon at all the beaches from the Channel to Pearl Point.  The salmon are being caught on poppers and bait.  If you walk between Gunnai Beach and Pearl Pt there are some delightful gutters about halfway if you're wanting some exercise as well as throwing a few lures around. Some huge Taylor have been caught with the salmon using a wire trace and white bait.

The gummy shark have been quiet even on the moon.

Offshore there seem to be plenty of flathead being caught by launching from Cape Conran and a few gummy shark.

There are still some access issues with the beaches rough weather a few months ago. They have significant drops down to the beach making them hard to get down to - use caution. Check with locals before venturing out or alternatively give Parks Victoria a ring in Orbost. Latest photos can be seen on the Beaches page.

Before you decide on where to fish have a look from a high point for gutters along the beach edges - these will more often than not contain schools of foraging fish. All you need to do is cast into one of these gutters, preferably on an incoming tide, and hang on!!

Remember wherever your fishing - don't leave rubbish lying around, bring it home with you. We need to protect our environment - if we don't who will!

Finally, only keep what you need. We need to preserve our fish stocks so catch and release where possible. Log onto the Fishcare website for more information on catch and release rulers and techniques.

Check with your local advisor upon arrival in town to make sure that these reports are up to date. We will attempt to update this site as often as possible. If you have any feed back please contact us and we will be happy to post your stories, adventures and photos on this site.
